Scampi (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) is also known as the giant river shrimp or giant freshwater shrimp. A large number of brackish and freshwater Scampi (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) is farmed and found throughout The Mekong Delta region, in southwestern Vietnam. It is one of the biggest freshwater prawns in the world and is widely cultivated in several countries for food. While Scampi is considered a freshwater species, the larval stage of the animal depends on brackish water.

Scampi bloodstock may be procured both from wild and grown-out ponds, in later case, care should be taken that the stock is not under severe inbreeding depression. Raising healthy brooders in the close vicinity or at the hatchery site is ideal. If reared at the hatchery site, the stocking density should be <10,000/ha. Half of the feed ration may be substituted with the equivalent number of pieces of fresh feed, such as mussels’ flesh, cut to the appropriate size, at least twice per week.

VAFCO’ Scampi (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) size from as small as 13/15 to 2/4/6/8/10/12 are available. The additional quantity of Scampi (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) produced by these farms may also require IQF facility.
